Spring into Action
Spring has sprung, and it already feels like summer has arrived here in Southern California. With the unseasonably hot weather we’ve had this past month, I’d venture to say we’re heading into a very hot and fire-prone year ahead.
Our association has shifted into “proactive” mode when it comes to fire safety and is currently developing a CLCA Firesafe Landscape Certification program. More details on this program should be available soon. In the meantime, save the date and plan to attend our June 16 Lunch & Learn. We’ll be joined by Lindsay Ono, Professor of Ornamental Horticulture at Bakersfield College and past CLCA State President, who will provide updates on firesafe landscaping and California’s “Zone 0.”
Zone 0 is a new wildfire defensible space requirement created under AB 3074. It establishes an ember-resistant buffer within 0–5 feet around any structure (buildings, decks, stairs, attached fences, etc.). You won’t want to miss this!
Spring also brings the deadline for our association’s Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation (LEAF) scholarship applications. Providing funds to college and university students pursuing landscape-related programs is something we’re especially excited about. Visit clca.org/leaf for more info.
Thank you to everyone who attended our recent Lunch & Learn workshop, and welcome to all our new chapter members! As we move through this busy spring season, our OC Chapter is also gearing up for our annual Golf Tournament on April 16 at the beautiful Tijeras Creek Golf Course in Rancho Santa Margarita. I hope to see you there!
We have an exciting year unfolding, and I look forward to meeting and seeing you out on the trails soon.
